Saturday @ 3pm: Sweden vs England
Story of the Tie
Sweden have been an incredibly solid structure throughout the tournament, having only conceded 2 goals all tournament (both to Germany). Their tactic will be simple, get men behind the ball in a solid 442 and hope to catch England on the counter.
England have had a massive swell of optimism since their penalty shoot-out in what has been their most positive campaign for years. They will attack and, unlike previous England sides, will string passes together at speed.
What’s been said
“I said a couple of things and, I admit, some of them are unacceptable.” – Diego Maradona apologises for his rant about the England-Colombia game
“We know they have Harry Kane, who is really dangerous in the penalty box, so we need to be very strong in the box and try to make sure that they don’t get the service that they need.” – Swedish Captain Andreas Granqvist
“Vardy didn’t train today, so is looking doubtful for this game.” – England Manager Gareth Southgate
“I’d have liked a week to enjoy this one but haven’t got that because Sweden are a team I respect hugely. We’ve not got a good record against them, I think we’ve always underestimated them. They have good plans, they have a clear way of playing – and it’s bloody difficult to play against.” – Southgate on Sweden
England to dominate possession as Sweden to try to weather the storm. It won’t be an entertaining game. England to eventually make the breakthrough in the second half and win 1-0.
